My lab work started 1 yaer ago and it's been 3 week since my intern at startup started. I noticed some of the differences between them so I am going to share.
1:Your idea is probably not new at startup.
I think in research fields you have to be really original. However in startups, the originality is not in the first place. Startups is focusing on each applications.
2: Colleagues are much more important in startups than in lab.
It is often said co-researchers are important but I think in startups, colleagues are much more important. From my experience, I am mostly alone in lab.
3:Competitor is next to you in lab.
Both startups and labs are competitive but the big difference is if you can see your competitors. In lab, you can see your competitor easily. However for startups, the biggest competitor is your inertia. Statups make speed important.
Contrary to it, lab can see competitors so they are mostly not quick.
It depends on number of people but both similarity are motivated people. I mean there are a few people who are not motivated. (My startup doesn't have unmotivated employee that's because less than 20 people)
